Password managers in plain English: stop reusing the same password

If you use the same password in a few places, one leak exposes them all. Here's what a password manager does, why it's safe, and how to start.

Be honest: do you use the same password, or a couple of close variations, across lots of accounts? Almost everyone does. The problem is that when one website gets breached — and they regularly do — those details get tried against your email, banking and everything else. A password manager fixes this, and it’s simpler than it sounds.

What a password manager actually is

It’s a secure, encrypted vault for all your logins. You remember one strong master password; it remembers the rest. When you visit a site, it fills in the right login for you, and it can generate long, random passwords you never need to memorise.

“Is it safe to keep all my passwords in one place?”

It’s far safer than the alternatives most people use — reusing passwords, or keeping them in a notes file or on paper. Good password managers encrypt your vault so that even the company providing it can’t read your passwords. The one thing you must get right is a strong master password plus multi-factor authentication on the vault itself.

Why it beats “remembering” them

  • Every account gets its own strong password, so one breach can’t spread.
  • You stop getting locked out and resetting passwords constantly.
  • It warns you if a saved password turns up in a known data breach.
  • It works across your phone and computer, so logins follow you.

How to start without the overwhelm

  1. Pick a reputable password manager (we’re happy to recommend one).
  2. Set a strong master password you’ll never reuse, and turn on MFA for the vault.
  3. Install it on your phone and computer and let it save logins as you sign in.
  4. Over a week or two, update your most important accounts — email, banking, socials — to new unique passwords.

You don’t have to do everything at once. Securing email and banking first already removes most of the risk.
